Volunteers
We are always looking for volunteers to help out at the BMX track. The following describes the different volunteer positions that are available:
Registrar: Duties include collecting registration slips and entry fees; verifying rider's age, class, NBL number, expiration date and bike number.
Motowriter: Requires firm and legible handwriting (printing) and concentration. Duties Include: Enters rider information on motosheets from registration slips or forms, including NBL number, bike number, name, age/class and state.
Pre-Stager: Helps control racers as they move into staging. Requires minimum of training but should be authoritative. Duties Include: assigning racers to staging lanes; checks riders for proper equipment (visual check); checks bikes for proper equipment (visual check); maintains order in the pre-staging area.
Stager: Should have basic knowledge and understanding of NBL Rules of Competition. The Stager's responsibilities are: check each rider off as they enter lanes; circle gate positions of rider(s) not answering staging call; direct riders to starting lanes; conduct draw for gate positions for semi and/or mains.
Gate Monitor(s): Should have through understanding of the nature of illegal starts and the judgement to make firm decisions without hesitation. Duties Include: Observing starts to detect illegal starts. Order race stopped as soon as possible if illegal start occurs. Identify violator and notify referee and/or head scorer
Announcer: Should have understanding of NBL Rules of Competition. Male or Female person; bubbly and outgoing; able to quickly respond to the race competition and announce to the spectators and riders what is taking place; to control the crowd if in an unsafe area.
Starter: Should have a strong, clear voice. Duties Include: Check track to be sure it is clear. Control the start by determining riders readiness, issuing the starting commands and releasing the gate. Signal a stop to the race if the gate monitor(s) call an illegal start. Observe riders as they run down the starting hill and the first straightaway for possible infractions. It is important that the starter maintain a regular cadence and speak loudly and clearly.
Corner Marshals: Knowledgeable volunteers can serve in this critical position if properly instructed and trained. Duties Include: Observe racing in a designated sector of the track a note any violations. Signal with yellow flag when a rider goes down. Summon medical aid, if necessary. Clear track of unsafe conditions. Groom track. Maintain written log moto by moto, noting infractions.
Scorers: Scorers record the finishes of each individual race and turn these sheets in immediately following each moto to the clerk. Scorers must be accurate and able to record the letters as well as the numbers. Scorers never relay to the rider how they finished. All finish line sheets are compared at the clerk's table and then the results are posted to the moto sheets. THIS IS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT POSITIONS ON THE TRACK. THE ACCURACY OF THE SCORERS WILL DETERMINE THE RACE'S OUTCOME.
Gate Verifier: The Gate Verifier is responsible for noting riders not starting in assigned gates and/or not starting.
Runner: Collect scorer's slips and take them to the scoring table. Also used to deliver the trophy copies of the moto sheets to the trophy person.
Trophy Person: Is responsible for reading moto sheets to obtain rider's finish for the day and award the corresponding trophy. This position is enhanced when the volunteer understands and can explain how points are tallied for each race and totaled to determine the finishes.
Track Maintenance Official (Grooming & Preparation): A person who is able to assist the Track Director and his Assistant in grooming and preparing the track for the day's race. Track preparation is primarily performed one hour prior to registration; duties would include setting up all equipment, liming the track, sweeping, watering. Track personnel are also needed to assist in putting all equipment and supplies away following the race, picking up trash, etc.
